Cut It
how do you take off the shifter on a 1995 6speed corvette
It is screwed on. Turn it counterclockwise. If it is an automatic there is a little horseshoe clip in the front of the shifter just pop it out and the shifter knob will pop off.
You should just unscrew it off the shifter. It might be on there tight, but it should just screw off. I put the stock shifter knob on my B&M short throw shifter
Remove the rubber boot by taking out the 4 Philips screws in the pastic base then lift it off. the boot is attached to the plastic. Then pull the next rubber mat up enough to get to the 3 torx screws, These are what holds the shifter in. MAKE SURE THE VEHICAL IS IN NEUTRAL. Remove the screws and lift the shifter out. First take off the cover that goes around the radio and the shifter. It just pops off if you use a flat head and pry up, there are about 6 clips. Then you unscrew the shift knob, and remove the boot, and then there is the rubber boot. Use a 10mm socket to take the 4 bolts out and remove the rubber boot. There will then be the shifter with another small rubber peice that covers where the shifter enters the tranny. Take it off ( it probably has a zip tie so cut it). Then theres the tricky part. There is a C-ring on the bottom of the shifterpart of the transmission ( follow the shifter down to where it meets the tranny, there will be a bunch of white plastic peices that hold it in. Onto of those is the c-ring) Use snap ring pliers to romove it ( its really stiff) and then pull the shifter out. You can then just pour the tranny fluid in. Make sure you don't use to much or to less. ( check the factory service manual for specs).
with a hammer
yes you can do this yourself by taking out the shifter and cutting it shorter with a saw. but then you will need to re-thread the shifter in order to screw a knob on. unless you have a knob that attaches itsself to the shifter with screws on the side. this is a ghetto way of doing it, but will work. or if you have $100-$200 to spend, simply buy a cimplete new short shifter off ebay, or anywhere and install it yourself which is a pretty simple job. take off the dash surrounding the shifter by popping it outwith a flat-head screw driver or your fingers. unattach the shift boot (the leather-like material surrounding the shifter. from here, you will be able to see the top of your transmission, where the shifter goes in. unscrew the plate on top of the transmission, and slide out the whole shifter. simply repeat this process in reverse to install your new aftermarket short shifter, making absolutely sure you are putting in the white plastic bushing at the end of the shifter that goes into the transmission, which ensures that it is secure and there is no play in the shifter.
First take off 4 screws at the bottom of the center console 2 on the driver side and 2 on the passenger side, by now the center console should be loose slide it a bit backward and take the shifter cable off the Floor sifter assembly, then take of the main window switches off, on the shifter assembly there is 4 bolts take them off and you are done.
put the vehicle in neutral. remove rubber boot that is around the gear shift where it goes thru floor.u will see at bottom of shift a ball. push down on this ball and twist it.it has 2 pins that hold it in place ,sort of like a light bulb.when u twist it, it will clear the pins,u then just lift the shifter out of the tansmission
depends on if it is an automatic or manual
No, the transfer case 'Shifter Sheet' (not seat) is changed by removing the shifter from the inside of the vehicle. I recommend you get a manual and learn how to remove the shifter. Several are available for free download. It has been a while but from memory I can say that the rubber boot inside is pulled up followed bu the shifter rubber dust boot underneath, then you can push down on the retainer that is around the shifter and give it a 1/4 twist CCW to get it off, the shifter should pop out by pulling up on it. As I recall the knob has to be removed to replace the 'Sheet'.
My guess is a short in the wires in the general area of the shifter.
