The 292 chev6 engine has a taller block, noticeable above the water pump. The 250 engine deck is almost level with the top of the water-pump, where the 292 deck is 1.5" above the water-pump, due to the longer stroke crank. Also the lifter covers are taller as a result. Other differences are 1) a- different camshaft, due to a notch cut-out so the crank won't conflict. b-the cam also has the fuel-pump lobe located in further down the cam. 2) Right-hand engine mount bracket is different from the 250. 3) 1/2unf bolts for mounting the flywheel to the crank. The 250 uses 7/16unf. 4) The 292 may use a larger capacity oil-pan in some circumstances, in conjunction with longer pump-pickup. 5) Longer rear alternator support bracket, due to a taller block.

Similarities 1) Uses same fuel-pump. 2) uses same cylinder head and valve-cover. 3) same manifolds 4) same oil-pump

Possibilities 1) same water-pump (do check, 250 & 292 each used same variants with different pulley-flange depths 2) Distributor ( I have seen extensions on some of the units, but I put my 250 dist into my 292 3) Balancers (definately separate units, 292 has more depth, I did'nt have the correct unit, so I put my 250 unit on, and 4yrs later still very smooth operation. 4) HEI dist caps (1st showed up in '75 with an external coil, not sure but it was '76 or '77 thereon that the engines came with an integral coil in cap. 5) Manifolds (eventually the 250's came with a integral intake on head, with the exhaust unbolting below, these suffered cracking- and are to be avoided. I'm not sure if the 292 ever came with an integral manifold, but I think they did get a 2bbl intake with a feed-back carburetor. and last but not least, Yes you can put a 292 in a car if you get a nice long, narrow hood scoop. How do I know if it is a 235 cubic inch engine?

The last year Chevy used the 235 was 1962. After that the 230, 250 and 292 came into the picture. The 235 and the earlier 215 valve cover was held down with two nuts on top. The 235 engine will not interchange with the later 1963 and up engines.
