If you are really that brave, then you can tell her yourself; but DON'T have a friend do it for you. Maybe do it the old fashion way and write her a note.

One true story I know of personally is a guy who was (and still is) in a famous rock and roll band used to go the girls house and and he gave her singing lessons. She was fifteen in the 1970's. They have been happily married since that time.

You can do a project with her for school, or ask her if she wants to go Bowling with friends, or any other fun activity. Remember the most important part of any relationship is your FRIENDSHIP. Really being best friends, being totally honest - this is what creates a great "relationship."
Maybe you both like something, anything, you can talk about that. If you're happy to see her, say, "It's good to see you." If you like anything about her, tell her. You can let her know she's really smart.
Relax and laugh a lot with her. That will create fun memories and will alleviate feeling nervous. Most of all HAVE FUN together - and ALWAYS tell her the truth!
