How do you tell how many puppies a female dog will have?

Well if you had a few litters before you can guess. Maybe when she gets closer to giving birth feel for them and try to count them. Or you could just go the vet and get an ultra sound. Otherwise you don't know exactly. Sorry!! Good luck though! =)

It is very hard to determine exactly how many puppies to expect when your Dog is pregnant, but there are some things that can help. Firstly, as a general rule, the larger the Dog the more puppies it will have. Therefore, a Chihuahua is likely to have between 3 and 5 puppies, whereas a Great Dane is more likely to have around 8 or more puppies. This is not always reliable, as first time mums can have smaller litters and some females do have much larger litters than average. The easiest and most reliable way to tell how many puppies your Dog is expecting is to have her X-rayed by a veterinarian at a late stage in the pregnancy. The vet can count the tiny puppies' skulls and tell you roughly how many the Dog is carrying.

The only sure way to know is to have an xray of the mother dog. This should be done about 2 weeks before the due date as all of the pups should be already formed and their skulls can show up on the xray.
