Put it in 5th gear, (preferably facing uphill) Give it plenty of revs and try to pull away.

One of either two things will happen;

Firstly the car will not stool straight away or not even stool when the clutch if fully engaged (the clutch is out); result; you need a new clutch.

Secondly, the car will stool straight away which means the clutch plate and flywheel are engaging and gripping well; a good sign BUT it could mean your thrust bearings are worn in which case it's as much work as replacing the clutch so you may as well replace that while the mechanic has your car in pieces as it's a good 100 quid for labour alone!

Before you do any of the following, get someone to push the clutch in and out to check which cable it is, give it a little tug around to make sure it's not caught on anything and see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't, have a look somewhere on the cable for an adjuster screw/nut and tighten it all the way. If there is no difference, try loosening in all the way, if it still makes no difference, try the first thing I mentioned... Hope this helps! Good luck, Karl!

When you install a clutch in a 1986 Honda prelude does it have a cable that needs to be bled?

If your replacing the clutch you shouldn't need to bleed anything. But you probly should adjust it, I'm prety sure the 86 has a cable clutch, which is easy to adjust. if you happen to have a hydrolic clutch you should bleed it just to make sure.

When the clutch goes out how do you know if it's the clutch cable or plate?

have someone step on the clutch for you and see if the "folk" moves. if it does you'll know the cable is working fine.you may want to check the cable adjuster mounted on the pedal itself.a simple test to do and find out if the clutch plate is worn out. turn your vehicle on put it in gear and just let go of the clutch (with out hitting the gas)if the vehicle stays on your clutch disc is slipping and needs to be replace.if the vehicle dies obviously the clutch is ok.

Can clutch cable mimic throwout bearing problem in 1995 dodge neon?

The self adjusting mechanism of the clutch cable can be slipping and making a click noise and not engaging the clutch when you press the pedal. You might just need a new clutch cable.

How do you know what is broken on a 94 Nissan Sentra with cable clutch when the clutch won't disengage gears and there is no tension on clutch pedal and heard a loud snap before tension lost?

It sounds like it is the clutch cable. I have a 94 Nissan Sentra and the clutch cable just broke. I have replaced one on an older Nissan, but it is still difficult for me to do on the 94. It is really hard to get the broken cable out.

On A 1988 Ford F-Super Duty new clutch installed by amateurs just prior to purchase pedal is very low and very hard shifting when hot?

If you have hydraulic clutch there is air in the lines and needs bled. If not hydraulic it could be a stretched cable, a bent clutch fork, or they have installed a clutch for a different model.

No.The clutch cable need the housing to pull against to do its job. The engineering name is Bowden cable, you may want to do a net search for a more thorough explanation.

How do you adjust clutch on 84 750 Honda shadow?

If it is hydraulic, there is no adjustment, just make sure no air is in the line. If it is cable, then there should be a screw at the clutch lever which will tighten the cable. If the clutch really slips, then, well, plates will have to be replaced.
