You cannot tell the gender from their claws or color. You must look for the presence of "gonopores" at the base of the last pair of walking legs. Gonopores will be on the female crab they look like two small dots. Look up "hermit crab gonopores" for a photo reference.
If you go to buy hermit crabs at a store, you're most likely getting purple pincher crabs (also called Caribbean Crabs)
purple pincher hermit crabs, you can tell this crab apart from other because they have a purple pincher. these need fresh water so the water we drink is the water they need to drink all other type of hermit crabs need salt water
There are several species of Land Hermit Crabs and hundreds of species of Marine Hermit Crabs. As requested, here are 5 species of Land Hermit Crabs. Coenobita Clypeatus (Purple Pincher) coenobita Compressus (Ecuadorian) Coenobita Rugosus (Rug) Coenobita Perlatus (Stawberry) Coenobita Violensus (Viola) Coenotiba Bervimanus (Indo) - a bonus one!
Your hermit crab is pink because it just molted. hermit crabs are vertibrates which means they need to molt to grow. hermit crabs burrow underground to molt and stay their for a week to months.
No, it's fine. You just must have purple pincher hermit crabs (also called Caribbean crabs). I have 3 hermit crabs, all purple pinchers. Their claws are red with purple in the center and their legs have a purple-ish & red-ish hue. No worries, that's just the type of crabs they are. Purple pincher crabs are the most common to buy in pets stores.
Because when they pee thrugh their antanas they get it on their selfs and get infected
Coenobita clypeatus, or the purple pincher, PP, Caribbean species is the easiest to keep because it seems to be generally the hardiest species. Strawberries, or perlatus, are the most fragile and the hardest to keep successfully.
Normally the hermit crab is the only one kept as a pet.
There are aquatic and land hermit crabs. Some land hermies are the Purple Pincher (PP & the most common) and the strawberry hermit crab.
No, but this means you have a Purple Pincher Hermmie. I have one too, his name is Taco<3. But, anyways, to tell if you're Hermmie is a boy or girl you will have to look closely when it is out of it's shell a bit. There will be a hole at the base of its back set of legs ( not sure what side.. ) If it were to be a female. If it doesn't have these holes you are an owner of a Purple Pincher Male Hermit Crab! Hope this helps.?
The scientific name for a crab is Pediculus pubis.
