From the top of my head, there are several ways to approach this.
Assuming you're at a jewellers, you will be able to ask. Most jewellers will be more than happy to tell you and have a great depth of experience in this area.
If you're by yourself, gold has several properties that are useful for testing. Firstly, gold is a fairly heavy metal. With a measuring flask and water you can calculate how many cubic centremeters of gold you have, then with some scales calculate the weight per cubic centremeter (or millilitre if you will), and compare this to what it should be (you should be able to find out the numbers you're afer from Google). Secondly, gold does not set of metal detectors, so if you have this, it can form as a second test.
