On the clutch side of the bike, down at the base of the front cylinder where the primary cover meets the case, is a plug. Unplug this plug and plug in a multimeter. Set the multimeter to 200 volts ac. Start the bike. Voltage should read at least 17 or 20 volts at idle. Rev the engine. Voltage should go up when revved. It's not uncommon to hit 35 or 40 volts. (depends on type of stator) Voltage should vary greatly from idle to revving. If you get no rise in voltage while revving, or if it's not putting out at least 17 volts at idle, the stator is bad. If your stator tests fine, your regulator/rectifier could be bad.

You may not have tightened it last time you checked the oil. Or your rings maybe getting bad and creating blow by taking a compression test that should tell you what is up.
