I'm not sure on the 1997 pickup but, I had an older Datsun that had a slot, similar to a screwdriver slot, in the male part that juts down from the hood/bonnet. there was a spring around that male part. Inside that spring is a hex locknut. You loosen the locknut, screw the male part clockwise/inward. Then tighten the locknut. This shortens the male piece and brings the hood down tighter. There are also supposed to be rubber bushings/supports along the fender sides of the engine compartment. One or two of these may be missing. Look at another truck like your's to confirm this first. Hope this helps.
