Yes. Each computer has what's called a MAC address that cannot be modified. This address can be linked to an IP address and with that information, narrow down the location the computer is connected. It's not fool proof, but it can be done.

In the unfortunate event that your laptop should be stolen, you should immediately contact your local authorities and alert them. The earlier this is done, the higher your chances of recovery. Even then, the recovery rate for a stolen laptop is remarkably low. There are a number of third party applications available that are capable of detecting and preventing laptop theft in the first place, including tools to recover the laptop once it's stolen through IP and GPS notifications. Tools such as these can greatly increase the changes of recovering a stolen laptop.

Trying to locate someone's stolen laptop may not be as easy as it seems. After reporting it to the police, the victim can periodically check any photo storage websites they use to see if any images of the culprit has been uploaded by accident. If the laptop is enabled with GPS it might be able to be tracked based on its usage.

If you look up a bad site on a k12 loaner computer will you get in trouble?

THat rather depends - on whether they scrutinise the computer when they get it back. The history log is date and time-stamped. If they discover illicit material - it will be traced to when the computer was used. That will tell them who had it in their possession at the time !

Can you track a stolen Toshiba laptop?

Yes you can, if you have a GPS or other tracking device installed inside it. Sometimes it may be possible to trace a stolen laptop or computer if it goes online via the internet, in the same manner organisations track pirated copies of their software on your system. There are also software you can download onto your laptop discreetly, for a price, to track its location and how it's being used by others.

Can a pawn shop tell if a computer is stolen?

Yes, depending on the make and how old it is. Majority of the time, you'll get caught if it is stolen. Here in Canada, the police check pawn shops weekly for electronics that have been reported stolen. So if the computer has been reported to the police as stolen, and you sell/pawn a stolen computer, then ya I'd expect them to find out. If it is a stolen machine then whether or not it's been reported as a stolen computer really depends on the previous owner. Example: if the owner is a person who knows almost nothing about computers and they only have one to use for internet research and email etc. Then obviously that was a big deal to that owner, they used it for important things. Also for some reason a working computer to someone who knows nothing about them could be worth a lot of money in their mind. Even if its a p2/32MB SDRAM, and a 4GB HDD, if it works then it could be worth whatever they bought it for in their mind, when really it's only worth about 40$
