First you should ALWAYS see your Doctor Who will generally send you to an Opthamologist (eye specialist.) A cold tea bag helps.

  • Pour boiling water over tea bag and brew for 2 - 3 minutes
  • LET COOL!
  • Then drain a little of the tea out and put the tea bag on your eye.

DO NOT DO THIS without first consulting your doctor!

Do not under-estimate the pain involved here - this is excruciating. There is no real relief for the pain except to wait it out. Scratches usually heal in 36 - 48 hours. The following will help:

  • Go to see an eye doctor. They will put amazing yellow drops in your eyes which take the pain away while they examine you. These wear off after around 2 hours. Apparently it is not a medical conspiracy that prevents the doctors from letting you have them to take away - they stop the cornea from healing and can lead to a perforated eyeball (you thought that you were in a bad way!)
  • Lay still in a darkened room
  • Blow your nose (don't ask me why but this really does help a bit)
  • Do not try to read or look at a bright screen - if you are reading this then you haven't scratched your eye very badly (if my experience is anything to go by!)
  • Don't move your eyes suddenly
  • One of the eye doctors who I saw recommended a maximum dosage of over-the-counter ibuprofen. You can't take this on an empty stomach so have it with a drink of milk. This doesn't take the pain away but does make it almost bearable.

Good luck and remember: this probably will not last for long and your eye is good at healing itself.

Rinse with cold, clean water for a few minutes. The scratch will heal on its own after 3 days. If it doesn't or if the pain increases, go see your eye doctor immediately.
