Rescue breathing, or mouth-to-mouth, which is part of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), or BCLS (Basic cardiac life support), is usually indicated as a first emergency measure after 911 is called. You should contact your local Red Cross, or look on the web for certified lay person CPR courses in your community to learn the appropriate technique for this as if a person isn't breathing you should, also, be checking for a carotid pulse and initiating chest compressions, which shouldn't be done without training as one could fracture several ribs if these are done improperly, and are ineffective if not properly done. Remember, if a person isn't breathing, you should, also, be checking to make sure items are not lodged in his/her throat. Again, the Heimlich maneuver is part of the CPR courses. In any case, the most important thing to do is to make sure that 911 is activated as soon as possible so that appropriate emergency treatment by professionals can begin as quickly as possible to prevent further problems.
