Why not take the direct approach and do the asking yourself? If you're not comfortable with a date, get a group of friends together to go to the movies or mall and ask him/her to join all of you.

Make friends with him,get to know him.maybe you guys have so much in common then get closer and closer to him, be cool,urself and relax bingo! ok, just smile, laugh at his jokes even if there not funny and get your friends to get digging!!
