First of all make sure that your gas cap is screwed on tightly. If the light stays on when you start the engine then take the truck to a mechanical shop who has a digital code scanner to plug in under your steering column. That instrument will read the computer codes and will tell the technician what other problems to look for. I have a 2003 S10 4x45 crewcab with the 4.3 litre engine with auto trans. My truck was diagnosed as having bad oxygen sensors and also the catalytic converter or muffler had been rattling for sometime. It turned out to be the catalytic converter was broken inside and will be replaced. My gas mileage has been really bad and the power was down on steep hills all winter but now with a new catalytic converter installed and most of the exhaust system replaced with replacement parts which did not fit correctly and there are at least two exhaust leaks which could not be fixed. Although the gas mileage has improved somewhat the problem is still that the check engine light is still always on. The mechanical shop realizing their error with the shoddy parts that they will be installing an entire brand new GM catalytic converter and the rest of the exhaust system this coming week.
