Two ways. On the bottom of the disposal in the center there is a hex shaped hole. A rod came with the disposal for that purpose. It may be under the sink somewhere. Insert the hex key and wiggle back and forth.
Second way, use a wooden broom handle or similar, put it in the disposal and gently pry against the blades using the opening in the sink as the pivot point. Pry both ways and you can usually get it loosened.
Garbage disposal unit was created in 1927.
Instead of calling the plumber the next time your garbage disposal clogs, try to fix the problem yourself. First, unplug the garbage disposal. Then, use a broom handle to manually rotate the blades. The broom handle gives you enough leverage to turn the blades even if there is a clog. Once the blades turn freely, remove the material that caused the clog. Only use your hand if you are sure that the power is completely disconnected. Once the clog is removed, plug the disposal back in, press the reset button, and turn it on. The unit should now work properly.
Defective garbage disposal.
A consumer can determine the best garbage disposal unit for their needs by knowing how much waste is normally dumped in the sink on a daily basis such as vegetable cuttings or food scraps.

I toss it in the composter. Otherwise, toss it in the garbage, NOT in a sink disposal ! It might clog the unit.
Of course there is no rule against it; however, you do not want to put certain things in your disposal. Potato peels can clog it, for instance. Also, throwing tea bags into your disposal is a bad idea as the strings on the teabags may wrap around the unit's hardware which can affect the performance of the disposal as well as the dishwasher (if it is hooked up with the garbage disposal).
A garbage diposal can draw anywhere between 5 to just over 8 amps depending on the size of the unit
First and foremost, disconnect the power supply to the disposal. Most accidents involving a garbage disposal are the result of tools and hands being inserted into the unit, which then powers on. Disconnect the unit before working on it. Once the problem is resolved, reconnect the power source and set the rubber collar in place before turning on the unit.
You could always ask people who have had a certain unit you want and see if they approve. You can also check online for disposal reviews at www.buzzillions.com.
I usually reach in and get it. If something is jammed you can either use the hex wrench that was with the disposal to turn it from the bottom of the unit or use a wooden broom handle to turn it from the top.
If it is a double sink, does the other side drain? Are you trying to fix the disposal because it does not come on or because it comes on but does not drain. If it comes on but does not drain and the other side does, it is probably just clogged with food. They make drain cleaners for disposals. If neither side drains, put the stopper in the disposal side, hold down on it and plunge the other side.
