To update your Android smartphone first go to Scroll down the setting menu than click on a about menu and than the manu can vary from device to an device but click the 'Software Update' or similar button
Usually Android upgrade can be done in 3 ways:
1. OTA (Over the Air): OTA updates are pushed by your vendor, usually OTA updates are pushed you will receive a notification that "an update is available" you can check for updates by heading over to Settings>About Device>Software Update.
2. By taking help of a PC suite (If available for you):There are some vendors like Samsung that have their own PC suite which can also be used to download OTA updates. You just need to install the PC suite over to your PC and connecting the device with the help of USB. And once connected, you have the option to check for updates.
3. By Rooting your device: This method is mainly employed by the users who gets themselves abandoned by the vendors and sometimes its also used by developers to ran test or sometimes by the users who don't want to wait for their vendor to push the update or to test other custom ROMs available out. It involves rooting the device (i.e. for every device rooting method is different) and then flashing custom ROMs over their device.
To upgrade your OS software (if it is available for the phone), go to settings > about phone > system updates > and you can update your software there. Hope this helps!
