If you are talking about the square kind with the plastic pegs that comes with loops, I can help.
You start by purchasing cotton or nylon loops from a craft store, if you don't already have them. You can also cut loops from socks, but this doesn't work quite as well. If you want to make a potholder, use cotton, because nylon will shrink once you take them off the loom.
Once you have the loops, it is a good idea to decide which colors to use. Once you have decided on your pattern, the way it works is you stretch the loops on the pegs in ONE direction. Next, take another loop and weave over and under with the hook, hook the loop on, and stretch it across the pegs in the opposite direction. For the next loop you want to go under first, then over, etc. The hook really helps! when the loom is full, use the hook to pull loops through each other until there is only one loop remaining. Knot it off and you have a potholder! You can sew many of these together until you have a rug.
You can use yarn/thread, a needle, a sewing machine or a loom.
My cousin has her own loom and has been weaving for many years.

A loom
It is believed that the first weaving loom was used in the Paleolithic era. Up until the Industrial Revolution, weaving looms were operated completely by hand.
