You place a firm grip on the handle, which is the rod shaped part that covers the majority of the hammer; not the metal part.
Then you "aim" where you want to whack, keeping in mind that the smooth metal surface is what will hit what you want to whack.
After that you move your hand up, and using a combination of elbow and wrist motions whack what you need to whack.
