Most later model cars should not be Slim Jimmed. If you are not very care full a slim Jim can pull the linkage lose inside your door and will require the door panel to be removed from the inside with the door closed, a difficult job if not impossible with some cars. You can buy a complete lockout kit from your local auto parts store for less than $100 (about the cost of a locksmith these days) and it will save you money and damage from a slim Jim and be yours forever. The kit will come with all the special tools and instructionsfor most cars.
The old "slim jim" worked good on older vehicles from the 80's and older. Vehicle manufacturers have redesigned car doors to block the old "slim jim" from working.
You don't, can't be opened with a slim jim.
eat it
I am locked out of my Buick park avenue and have a slim Jim but don't know how to use it
I don't think a "slim jim" works. Pry open the top of the door (a tapered piece of wood or plastic, keep it ajar with a plastic or wooden wedge. Then use a piece of very stiff wire (a straightened-out thick coat hanger for example) then push on the power lock switch to unlock door. Using a "slim jim" will just bust off clips inside the door.
Don't use a slim Jim...You open a coat hanger and tighten the hook to be a little more closed, then you use wood wedges or a flat tool to pry the door open enough to let the hook through into the car. If you want you can use the slim Jim to help get the hook past the weather stripping, or you can just save the slim Jim to use on a different car that is not slim Jim resistant. Pull to get a broad curve in the wire and use it to pull the door handle open. Not easy takes about 20 minutes of steady effort.
Yes
While alone.
I can attest that it works. Using an upward motion with a slim jim ... just a few inches in from the window trim.
To use a Slim Jim on a Grand Am, insert it between the frame of the car and the window. Next, slide it to where the door lock is located.
Using a Slim Jim on a 2005 Gm 2500 is really quite simple. Simply slide the Slim Jim up to the window on the outside door panel and slide it down to attach to the metal bar that opens the door.
Ask the police department. They use them a lot.
