Coal is burned and the heat produced is used to make steam from water. The steam turns turbines which generate electricity.
In a CHP plant, some of the steam is used to provide hot water to nearby houses etc, rather than using all the steam to produce electricity. CHP stations are generally more efficient than traditional coal fired electricity generation plants.
