Profane is most commonly used as an adjective.
Example: It is considered extremely rude to use profane language in a church.

Profane can occasionally be used as a verb as well, as a synonym to "desecrate."
Example: Do not profane the gravestone by urinating on it.
Example: To award the freedom medal to a dictator is to profane its meaning.
