Firearms made before the 1968 Gun Control Act were not required to have a serial number- most of the Sears/ JC Higgins did not. Most of the bolt action 20 from Sears have a value of ABOUT $100 or so, depending on condition, bells and whistles, etc. You may want to talk with your insurance carrier- especially of you have replacement cost coverage- and come to an agreement with your carrier of buying a replacement gun of LIKE QUALITY- even if it is not the exact same gun. Take at look at the shotguns offered for sale at a couple of the internet auction sites- www.auctionarms.com, and www.gunbroker.com- you may find a photo of one that looks like yours, and can give you a better feel for pricing. When talking to your insurance company, remember that you may have to pay SHIPPING, and may have to pay a BACKGROUND CHECK fee when replacing your gun. Here in VA its only a couple of bucks, in some states, it may be $25 or so. Good luck
what is a J C Higgins Model 583.9 20 gauge worth
I have one marked "model 155" has no serial # and was purchased in 1964
JC Higgins Model 20 Shotgun does not have a serial number. Guns were not required to have a serial number before 1938
That's not a serial number- it is a model number. Made prior to 1968. serial numbers not required- and cannot be dated for that reason. Sorry.
I'm looking for the date of a J.C. Higgins bicycle with the serial number 705495
Actually, yes it is. Before 1969 many firearms had no serial numbers. I have two different models of JC Higgins bolt action shotguns made in the 50's and neither have serial numbers. Strange but true!
You should written it down when you bought it. If you bought it from a dealer in the past few years, he should have recorded the serial number in his "bound book" when you purchased it and may be able to find it (but he certainly won't want to dig out his old records, so you should at least know when you bought it).
High Standard shotguns made before 1969 did not have serial numbers except for some exported models and the Model 10-A bullpup. Your shotgun has no serial number.
Serial numbers on rifles and shotguns were not required until 1968. Most JC Higgins guns made prior to that never HAD a serial number- and yes, it is legal.
On the lattigo keeper
Rifles and shotguns were not required to HAVE a serial number until the 1968 Gun Control Act. Many of the J C Higgins branded guns sold by Sears were made before then. And yes, it is perfectly legal in the US to own a gun that never HAD a serial number- but illegal to remove a serial number.
There is no serial number on your shotgun. Serial numbers were not required befroe 1968.
