Assuming you have an older vehicle with points, the wire from the distributor goes to the neg side of the coil.

A distributor cap holds all the wires, A coil only has 1 wire in the top of it.
If you see no center coil wire connector then the coil is mounted inside the distributor. If there is a center coil wire connecter then follow the coil wire and it will go to the coil.
