Generally, I would think that you tell them about how the future will be better. Talking about how they SHOULD feel is never a good idea, despite whether that's actually the case or not. They'll argue with you on it if you say things will be okay, but that's because they want you to tell them it will be.

If you've never been depressed, you should talk to some people who suffer from this illness, or talk to a therapist or psychiatrist. If you can't talk to someone, at least do some research on the internet - NAMI, the National Association for Mental Illness, is a great resource.
