Oceanography is the study of the ocean. Hydrology is the study of the quality, distribution, and movement of water. Oceanography and hydrology cross paths in many areas, including: prediction of ocean system movement, echohydrology in the ocean biome, and chemical hydrology of ocean water.
The key oceanic research directions in the Department of Oceanography include 1) modeling of dynamical and chemical processes in ocean environment near the shallow coastal regions; 2) building meteorological, hydrological, and marine environment database; 3) developing, testing, and applying new modeling techniques, numerical model, applicable software for computing and forecasting natural variations in marine environment and ecology; 4) building numerous practical applications for ocean engineering, marine technology.
To date, the Department has successfully implemented a number of scientific projects at different levels including 8 national level projects; 1 provincial-level project; 11 projects of Ministry of Science and Technology; 5 VNU projects and 2 university-level project. The number of national and international scientific publications is increasing and attains roughly ~ 75 papers between 1995-2000.
The faculty members in the Department also published a number of textbooks and monographs, e.g., Introduction to Oceanography (1991); Tidal Theory (2002); Marine Hydrological Prediction (2002); Calculation in Oceanography (2003); Ocean Physics (2003); Marine Hydraulics (2003); Atmosphere-Ocean Interactions (2003); Fortran and Applications in Hydro-Meteorology and Oceanography (2006); Marine and Ocean Circulation Models (2006); Marine Currents (2006); Ocean Wave Theory (2006), Theory of Ocean currents (2008); Hydrology and Hydrodynamics of Vietnamese East Sea (2009).
The focal research interests conducting in the Departments are assessment of water resources, planning and managing water resources, studies on river and channel variations, mathematical models for hydraulics and hydrology, assessment of the impacts of climate change and natural calamity prevention, and predictions of natural hazard such as flood, erosion, or flash flood.
To date, the Department has conducted a number of scientific projects at various national and international levels including 14 national level projects, 4 provincial level projects, 1 projects sponsored by the Vietnam Ministry of Science and Technology; 1 World Bank project, 1 project sponsored by the Sweden Embassy; 20 VNU level projects and a larger number of projects at the university level. In addition, the faculty members in the Department have published around 100 papers in numerous national and international journals.
