I run a Breakdown Recovery business and have seen this before. Usually it happens when the battery has zero (I mean ZERO) charge and you are merely charging the battery using jump leads. An easier way to start it is to connect the positive cable (red) as usual but connect the earth to the engine direct. This should help unless the problem is not the battery.
