It is an "addon" for the browser known as FireFox. In fact, I use it. It simply blocks advertising. You may allow advertising from specific sites through ABP (AdBlock Plus).
Now, if you want to know the programming used to block the ads, I can't help you with that. I'm just glad to be using it.

If you have Firefox or Chrome installed, you can download Adblock Plus for free (just search it). I use Adblock Plus and have never had to watch a video ad on Youtube.

AdBlock is a free browser extension that blocks ads on websites. There are some additional features in AdBlock Plus, which may include a cost for certain users, but the basic ad-blocking functionality is free to use.
If your AdBlock program has blocked YouTube, you may want to disable the program. Ads displayed on YouTube help power the content creators too, so you may consider disabling AdBlock for the future too.
I installed AdBlock Plus to achieve those results.
