They didn't do much in WW1 they were only there 'just in case' for the allies (UK, France, US). Though they did have many many fresh troops sent over to Western Europe, they did not actually participate very much in the war. They were also partly the reason why the Germans agreed to sign the Armistice and accepted their defeat.

Every month thousands of new troops were sent and the Germans were clearly outnumbered. They were also far more advanced in technology and the government had more money to invest in them (high economoy- this is because of their neutral state during the earlier years of the war).

Hope this helped.

They didn't participate earlier on because it was beneficial economically. They were able to trade with BOTH sides of the war (while the other countries were busy at war), America was prospering.

They joined in 1917 because they considered the German's actions to be very inhumane. Because before 1918 the war was at a stalemate position. It means that no side was strong enough to overcome to other, so nothing much happened. To try to break this situation the Military decided to start unrestricted submarine attacks. Which meant that regardless of your flag (hence nationality), they would shoot you down. Many US PASSANGER ships were shot and so they thought the Germans went out of line, and decided to join.
