Buddhism can impact peoples lives in many ways. For one, understanding where suffering comes from means you can free yourself from suffering. When you touch one thing or one person, you have touch the Universe as a whole. When you understand that God does not punish you, but that your actions cause reactions then you become accountable for those actions.

Answer:

If the only thing that you take out of Buddhism is to adopt the Eightfold Path, which pretty much maps out a way to interact with society that can best be described as "Win/Win", you will feel a lot of stress disappear from your life.

It provides insight into our own natures, into human nature, that allow us to see the ways in which we create for ourselves an understanding of the world that isn't very accurate; it also provides us the tools to see (and test) this for ourselves and to develop the skills to gain a clearer view of ourselves and our relationship to the world.

That all sounds quite technical, but what it comes down to is this: having a clearer understanding of ourselves and the world makes it far, far easier to live a calm and peaceful life in the world -- one in which your path becomes smoother, your life less filled with aggravation, and your effect on others becomes a benefit to them, not a hindrance.

"How" can also be answered in terms of method, and to that my answer is: through work. Buddhism is not a magic pill, pure comfort, a balm: to benefit from the Buddhist way of life, you have to be willing to work at both understanding what the Buddha taught, and spending some time every day in meditation, and applying what you learn to every moment of your life. If you can do this, you'll find this path is, as the Buddha said, "Good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good at the end."

A lot depends on how seriously the person practices Buddhism. The minimum change for a practicing Buddhist is the practice of the Five Noble Precepts. Many Buddhists also practice daily meditation. Many also recite some sort of chant daily. Many practice the Noble Eightfold Path as well.
