Max was seen by Liesel when he was marching down Himmel Street in a group of other Jews that were being marched into a local concentration camp. Max is assumed dead considering he entered a concentration camp. Himmel Street is later bombed, Liesel being the only Survivor. Max was not on Himmel Street at the time, though, so he did not die. In a later chapter it is seen that Max and Liesel finally reunite, most probably after the war ended and the Jews were released from the camps. His death is not mentioned in the book, but one can infer that he probably died of a natural cause much later.
Max Vandenburg survives the war and reunites with Liesel after the war ends. They meet in a small town in Australia.
Liesel Meminger dies many years after the war in the book The Book Thief. It is long after she was reunited with Max. After she dies Death gives her the book she wrote and threw away many years ago.
Rudy Steiner dies in The Book Thief on page 533.
