when Raffles came back to Singapore, he found out that Farquhar had done a bad job of raising the city. Farquhar had introduced opium selling in order to get money for raising Singapore. Raffles then separated the different races with a town plan. He also stopped opium selling.

England
He was 38 years old when he came to Singapore.
No.
there was a harbour with deep waters for big ships to call at the port.there was plenty of fresh water so that ships could stop at the port for water before continuing their journeys and singapore was located along the main trade route between india and china.
Singapore was discovered by Sung Nila Utama (not sure how to spell his name), and when he arrived on Singapore, he saw a lion. Singa means lion in his language, and pura sorta means land, so he named it Singapura. Then Sir Stamford Raffles came and founded Singapura, and gave it an English name, Singapore.
He wanted to set up a trading port and a little settlement.
a fishing vilage. there was no tourism at all until sir stamfor raffles came in 1819.
Singapore River is a river which brought Singapore wealth as in the past, Singapore was a fishing area until Raffles came and developed this place into a trading port. Singapore River was the river that traders used to come into Singapore.
LOL ok I just learnt this in history this year. Gonna see how much I can remember. XD anyway, it depends on what is your definition of 'founder'. Most of us would automatically think, Sir Stamford Raffles. But actually, his partner, William Farquhar, was the one who made Singapore flourish and prosper. He helped with the problems Singapore faced in her early years, whereas all Raffles did was to have the amazing foresight that Singapore would be a good trading port (that's why the two of them came to Singapore). Also, there is John Crawfurd, who signed some treaty of some sort, which allowed the British to have the whole of Singapore. All in all, there is no real 'founder', all of them - all of the people in the past had a part in building up singapore's past to the present. Yeah, so, hope I helped you in some sort. ~sorry if there's any typo/wrong info~ ^^
"Singapore" is the English word for "Singapura", which means Lion City. This word originated when Sang Nila Utama, an Indonesian prince, set sail and discovered Singapore. He saw what he thought was a lion, which was actually a tiger on the island running at great speed, and since that was the first thing he saw on the island, he decided to name it Lion City, or Singapura. Singapore was also named Syonan-To during the Japanese Occupation in World War II. It meant "Island of the Light of the South" in Japanese.
