Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, was sent by the East India Company in search of a location along the trade route from India to China to form a colony which will serve as a British trading port. He found Singapore to be a perfect location and established the inhabited island into a metropolitan city today. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles was only in Singapore for a short period of 9 months. He was appointed a first the Lieutanenet-Governer of Java, before he was given the mission to search for a potential trading port. He stayed for a short while in Singapore before he left the administration work to William Farquhar, the first British resident of Singapore. He then came back and saw Singapore in a mess under Farquhar's leadership. He sacked Farquhar and spent about 7 months in Singapore to carry out his plans for the city. In 1823, Raffles left Singapore for Bencoolen, where he was to be appointed the Lieutanent-Governer. It was an order from the headquarters, and although he tried to decline, it was rejected. He spent about a few years there before he had to go back to England because of a severe disease. Since 1823, Raffles has never returned to Singapore.
