Many Christians have strong views on the rights and wrongs of premarital sex and other issues of sexuality, based on what they believe God requires of us. For many, premarital sex is very wrong, as is homosexuality. Some Catholics believe that any form of artificial contraception is against God's law. Some feel it their duty to impose those views on others who do not even share their religious beliefs. In the United States, young people are encouraged by pious Christians to be naive about their own sexuality and to believe that they will be chaste until such time as they marry, with the consequence that the United States has a high teenage pregnancy rate compared to the rest of the Western world.

Secular humanists believe that it is the right of all persons to live their lives as they wish, as long as they do no injury to others and do not offend against society. They believe that what happens in the bedrooms of consenting adults stays in the bedroom.

Recent evidence indicates either that the two formerly different views are converging in the United States, or that many more citizens of the United States are beginning to adopt secular humanist values. In the early 1970s premarital sex was accepted by 29% but accepted by 58% in the period between 2010 and 2012. There is widespread support for same-sex marriage, which is now legal. And 86% of Catholics say Birth Control is morally acceptable, as do 90% of non-Catholics .
