I'm no expert on vehicle design, but will provide some thoughts to consider, until someone better qualified to answer decides to contribute. And, I'll work from the reverse standpoint of the van as compared to the car. Generally, a VAN: * Is larger than the equivalent car. * Is on a heavier, stronger chassis, like a pickup truck. Good. * Has more doors, with larger openings. Good. * Has greater headroom than a car. Good. * Has greater load carrying capacity [pounds]. Good. * Has capacity to carry a larger number of passengers. Good. * Has more, and larger, windows, allowing for better visibility. Good. * Often has higher seating level providing better and safer visibility for the driver. GOOD. * Usually has a higher CENTER OF GRAVITY, causing more control and rollover problems. VERY BAD!!! * Usually has poorer fuel mileage than equivalent sized cars. Not good. There probably are more differences, but these are all that I can think of right now. Maybe someone else will expand this answer?
