Because the car is grounded, the lightning finds a path through the car to the ground, rather than through you.
You do not want to be touching the ground and car at the same time lightning strikes the car, then the lightning will go through you to the ground.

∙ 14y agoDisappointing as it may be, nothing much. There's too much metal in the car. When the lightning strikes, the charge is evenly displaced across the car, preventing any damage that may have occurred. You can Google images of cars being struck by lightning. If you'll notice, the interior of the car is completely unblemished from the lightning.

When it comes to lightning anything is possible, but it is highly unlikely. Lightning can for sure strike a car but as long as you are not touching any metal part of the car you are safe. Lighting will take the shortest path to ground and that is always metal not glass. I have never heard of lightning even breaking a sunroof. But with mother nature and the power of a lightning bolt anything is possible.
