Each part of the computer memory - each byte, in modern computer architectures - has an associated address, a number. Usually the programmer will be programming in a high-level language, which, instead of accesing memory directly by its address, uses a symbolic name - called a variable - to refer to this address.
It is up to the programmer to give variables their names. The programmer should try to keep these names meaningful. If the programming language allows longer names, don't abbreviate variable names to one or two letters.
