Best Answer

A fish has to be alive in order to prevent it from sinking, When it dies the water pushes it down just like everything else that is at the bottom of your aquarium. They have no air in them so they won't float.

Why do fish usually sink to the bottom of the tank?

If the fish is dead it may sink. Otherwise a fish can go anywhere in the tank by using its swim bladder. If the fish seems to be struggling to get to the surface, the fishes swim bladder is damaged and the fish should be euthanased.

Why do dead fish sink to the bottom of the tank?

All drains lead to the ocean, but when your fish dies, it is actually better to bury it because if it died from a disease, then the disease could survive the sewage system and stay in sink water. When people fill up their fish bowls, the disease could still be in the water, killing hundreds of local fish. MORAL OF STORY:Don't flush dead fish down the toilet.Bury them.

Why do dead fish sink first than float on water?

When a fish is alive it swims by moving its fins and tail rapidly, this keeps them from sinking. But as we know when a fish is dead it no longer controls its body and there fore no longer swims, and as was just stated brings to the conclusion that when a fish is dead it no longer floats because it is no longer swimming. Also, a fish doesn't have any air bladders that would keep them afloat as kelp do.After death the air bladders shall allow the dead organism (a fish) to stay afloat until along with the body the air bladders decompose and release the air and let the dead body to sink. But again, fish do not have air bladders so when they die they shall simply sink.
