When the trigger is pulled while the bullet and gunpowder is loaded, the trigger opens a spring that causes a small piece of wood holding a piece of flint to strike a steel slab. When the two touch the sparks light the gunpowder that is in the compartment under the steel slab, lighting it and throwing out the bullet.
As we know the flintlock today, the first was made in 1610 in France. There WERE earlier guns that used a flint sparking mechanism, such as the wheelock and the snaphaunce.
