When the operator pulled a lever, it moved the engine and its large flywheels (which were always in motion while the engine was running) back into contact with the friction pulley, which was connected to the pinion gear which drove the rear wheels. It was largely unsuitable for any kind of heavy draft work (such as a plow) because the friction wheels would quickly slip and begin to wear out. The machine was used mostly for stationary work such as driving a threshing machine.

Lawn tractor will not start without a boost new battery put in but still will not start?

Depending on what motor the tractor has, it sounds like it might need the valves adjusted. If it is an OHV Briggs this is more than likely the problem. If not ask again with more detail about your engine model.

Cummins N-14 has low power under a load?

The N-14 series is a good motor, with a fairly wide powerband. If the motor seems underpowered, it may be because of the tractor specs - the N14 series ranged from 370 to either 500 or 525 horsepower, and torque output was considerably different as you went through the horsepower range. Again, you may want to look at the overall tractor specs. If you're running in mountains, and your tractor runs something like 3.55, 3.58, 3.42, or 3.36 rear end gears, I'd look to that more as the source of your power problems rather than the motor.
