A horse can overheat by being worked to hard. I have typed some more reasons below.

  • Being ridden to long at hardworking paces (Cantering and galloping)
  • Being ridden for like an hour right after the horse hasn't been ridden in a while.

Here are some reasons to prevent this from happening

  • Never let your horse drink ice cold water after riding. Walk your horse around of a lead rope or bareback after riding. If you feel their chest and its warm, keep cooling them out. If it is regular body heat, go ahead and let your horse go in its field or stall. Also to prevent from drinking too much, let your horse have a couple sips of lukewarm water after riding, but be sure to still cool out first. don't let your horse gulp down water fast.
  • Next, if your horse hasn't been ridden in a while, work your horse for short amounts of time. Start at only walking and trotting for 10 minutes on day 1. On day 2, work for 15-20 minutes. Still only walk trot. Next, do 15-30 minutes. Just keep working your way up until you get to your usual riding time. Don't canter yet. Next, you keep working at the trot at your usual riding time. Next, after a few days of working at the trot at the same time, canter one lap in each direction, and one lap only! do this at the end of the lesson so you can just walk him/her on the lead rope for cool off. Each day gradually canter one more lap each day.

If you have anymore questions, check out books at the library, or ask an experienced horse person before you ride your horse.

no, a horse cannot overheat from not using a sweat scraper. The sweat scraper is only for removing the excess sweat from the hair of the horse, though certain breeds do overheat quicker than others, it has nothing at all to do with the grooming equitment.

Why should you not lunge a horse for any longer than 35 min's?

I don't see any reason to not lunge a horse for any longer than 35 minutes. When I was breaking in my horse (training her), we'd spend over two hours on a lunge line. The only thing I can see wrong with that would be to lunge a horse at a full gallop or canter for a while. It would tire the horse out and could do serious damage if he or she were to overheat from extended periods of work.
