How does a person train a dog to always sit or stand up when it is told to do so?

I found this information that it says you need to start having treats / food and do it with your hand ( put the food infront of his / her nose and slowly put it up, if your dog can't do it...gently push the but down and keep doing that while saying the word "sit" and when your dog get use to it they will know what is required when you say the word. ( My dog still required hand signal... )
