The rear window de fogger is simply an electric heater. It heats up the glass and water vapor evaporates off.
If the mist is on the outside of the window, use windshield wipers, roll down window, or use rear de-fogger, depending which window has misted up. If the mist is on the inside, turn on the heat/AC, roll down window, or use rear de-fogger, depending which window has misted up.
There are a bunch of relays under the hood near the firewall on the passenger's side. One of them might be for the de-fogger but you should call a GM dealer's service center to find out for sure. Also, Amazon or eBay should have Chilton repair manuals dirt cheap.
The little red, almost rust colored, lines in the rear window of many cars is the Rear Window Defogger. Sometimes, this is also referred to as a "Defroster". When the Rear Window Defogger is activated, a small amount of electricity is applied to those red lines, which causes them to increase in heat temperature. In turn, this will help to warm up the glass surrounding the wires, which in turn helps to de-ice or de-fog the window.
Do you mean defrost, as in a car window. Maybe some reference to defrosting the rear window with a button inside the car and not having to get out in the cold a scrape, scrape, scrape so you can see behind you while driving.

scraper is not the answer. Go to your local parts store and buy a gallon of DE-ICER. Add this to your window washer container, and presto. Just turn on window washer with your wiper switch and press washer button. Solution will de-ice windows almost instantly. You can also put some in a spray bottle to de-ice side windows and rear window. Hope this helps.
