Both valves are closed when the piston is at top dead center ( TDC ) As the piston moves down, creates vacuum. The athmospheric pressure opens the intake valve allowing the cylinder to be filled with air. The intake valve will close at the point when the piston reaches the bottom dead center. ( BDC ) The piston start moving up compressing the air above. As the pressure increases, the outlet valve opens and the piston pushes the pressurized air to leave the cylinder. The pressurized air moves to the air tank. The oulet valve closes at ( TDC ) During compressor operation, the above process is repeated. Both valves are being operated by the pressure differences against springs. Reciprocating compressors do not have camshafts like the internal combustion engines. John
