The rifle works off the idea of any firearm. Although different from the idea of the shotgun, the rifle uses cuts and raises in the barrel to spin the projectile. The 'rifling' is turned in clockwise or counter clockwise fashion. When the projectile is spinning, it is far more accurate because of the repeating motion.

When trigger is pulled, hammer or striker hits firing pin, crushing primer on cartridge. Primer explodes, igniting gunpowder in cartridge. Rapidly expanding gasses from gunpowder push bullet through barrel. As bullet passes down barrel, spiral grooves known as rifling spin the bullet like a thrown football, causing bullet to fly straight.

We generally do not speak of "disarming" a rifle- but we DO "clear" them. To do so varies from one rifle to another (they work differently depending on the model). In general, you unload the rifle, check the chamber and magazine to be sure it is empty, and pass the safety in the "ON" position.
