Although it's quite common to attribute human characteristics to an automated device, recognize that it's still just a machine. The computer inside a robot can only run the program that a human has put there, so in reality, a robot doesn't "know" anything.
However, the human designer and/or programmer can put sensors on a robot, and anything that the sensors can detect can also be stored in the digital memory of the robot. The human designer/programmer can also give the robot instructions to send that stored data to other computers, or even to an output device, such as a voice synthesizer, printer, video screen or whatever the designer/programmer determines to be appropriate.
There are quite a few people who have misconceptions about robots, unfortunately childrens' Cartoons and popular films do nothing to help people understand reality.
