A good example of the sensory/muscular connection is when you touch something hot, you quickly withdraw. The reason for this is that there are two parts to the nervous system, the CNS or central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), like the CPU of a computer and the PNS or peripheral nervous system (consisting of the nerves that link the body parts to the CNS) such as apps or software that has to communicate with the computer (CNS). This communication occurs via electrochemical pulses. The PNS is further divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. SNS is voluntary, ANS is not. The ANS is then further divided into the parasympathetic and sympathetic (fight ot flight) systems. Our brains are prewired so that only certain parts respond to certain stimuli (sensory units). The skin has sensory receptors contained within, these receptors communicate along sensory pathways to the cerebral cortex of the brain where the stimuli is processed and you take your hand away from the hot surface (muscle response).
