A shop will use a database to keep an inventory of stock on the shelves. When stock levels reaches a certain point, automatic reordering may take place. Price control should also be enabled within the database.

The systems used are all based on the same principle. The back office system in any store carries a full list of all stock by internal numbers, bar code, tax references descriptions of products, product group, inventory financials, and electronic transactions (credit cards). These data bases are linked to the EPOS system (the shop floor and warehouse in store). In addition these data files are connected to a central system--normally a head office where information is recovered to make adjustments to stock levels and orders and validate financials. Across the business there are a vast array of tables interacting with input and output data.
