if you are being truly altruistic you doing whatever it is that you are doing for someone else without thinking of yourself; if you are seeking self-aggrandizement you would being doing something for someone with your own reputation in mind ... the main difference between the two is obvious, the former is about acting selflessly, the latter is about selfishness
