I'm not sure that it is constant, or in all people... but, in general, advertising creates discontent by telling people what they do not have that they need. A better car, a better vacuum, more money, a stunning mate, etc. By showing people that their lives are not ideal, they promote sales... because people want to buy the things that they think will exalt them to that level of perfection. But it never is quite as good as what they see on TV or in the ads... so, the discontent remains, and they want to buy the next thing. OR, they are satisfied in that one area, but then a newer thing comes out and it begins again... or they are satisfied with the one thing, but dissatisfied with other things. There is never perfect contentment if you think that external things can bring you happiness, and so you will keep looking and trying for more.
