How does alkaline pH effect plants?

Whether soil is alkaline or not and whether it helps the plants grow all depends on the type of plant. If the plant you were growing was, say, peas, then the alkaline soil would help it grow. If the soil was a pH of 6 to 7.5, then the peas would grow better. If you were growing white hydrangeas (a type of flower), then the pH of the soil would need to be 6.5 to 8 (slightly acidic to slightly alkaline).

Again, the pH is different for all plants, and it could either be a positive effect or negative effect. I would suggest going to your local library to find a gardening book or simply going onto Google, Yahoo, Bing, or another search engine to find what your plant's suggested pH should be.

I hope this helped.

Alkaline and non alkaline soils?

Alkaline soils have a pH above 7, while non-alkaline soils have a pH below 7. Alkaline soils are more basic, containing higher levels of calcium, magnesium, and sodium, while non-alkaline soils may be acidic or neutral and typically contain more hydrogen ions. Alkaline soils can impact plant nutrient availability and can limit the growth of certain plants adapted to lower pH conditions.
